NOW'S THE TIME: THE READY CAMPAIGN ENCOURAGES AMERICANS TO RESOLVE TO BE READY IN 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With the new year approaching, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Ready Campaign is reminding Americans to Resolve to be Ready in 2009. Resolve to be Ready is a nationwide effort designed to encourage individuals, families, businesses and communities to take action and prepare for emergencies in the new year.

"Individual planning is the cornerstone of emergency preparedness," said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. "Since establishing this department and Ready, we have come a long way in raising the baseline of preparedness in this country, but we still have a long way to go. As 2009 approaches, I urge all Americans to consider the importance - and real value - of being prepared for all hazards."

Coyote Classic Regional Drill

On March 10th the Coyote Classic Regional Drill will be held at ASU along with Chandler FD. This is a Large scale Exposive Device Drill at ASU Sun Deveil Stadium involving AZ Dept. of Emergency Management, FEMA, CERT, ASU Campus Police, DPS, MCSO, FBI, Valley Metro, Air Evac, Indian Air MedEvac, Scottsdale PD, and Scottsdale PD. 1,000 patients are expected for this event and need to be triaged and transported to area hospitals. YES - 1,000 patients!

CERT West Valley Regional Drill

From January 23, 6 pm through January 25, 6 pm the West Valley Regional Drill will be held at the Avondale Training Facility.

Still needed are 30 Chandler CERT Members (any Operational Period), Plans Chief/Logistics Chief/Ops Chief/PIO/VRC for Operational Period 2, and IC/Plans Chief/Logistics Chief/Ops Chief/PIO/VRC for Operational Period 4.

Resignation of Joe Padberg as CERT President

Joe Padberg has submitted his resignation as our council President. As President-Elect, Walter Moffat will assume the presidency effective Jan 1, 2009.

Joe's leadership and organizational skills have been a tremendous asset to our council and program, and his presence will be missed.

With a New Year coming and many new challenges and opportunities ahead, we look forward to leadership and passion of Walter as our new President.

Arizona State Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) Coordinator

Arizona officially became the 35th state to have a State Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) Coordinator. Arizona Department of Health Services named Antonio Hernandez as State MRC Coordinator. Mr. Hernandez also serves as the ESAR-VHP state coordinator. This action will integrate Medical Reserve Corps and the Emergency System for Advance Registration of Volunteer Health Professionals providing more opportunities for collaboration.

If you have any questions regarding MRC, please contact Mr. Hernandez at 602.364.3295 or hernanac@azdhs.gov. CERT members with medical training are welcomed to do both if they like.

2008 Chandler Parade of Lights

As a reminder to everyone, the City of Chandler Parade of Lights is this Saturday. Line up begins at 5:00 PM with judging at 6:30. We have had a good response from people that plan to attend both he parade and decorating party at 1:00 PM - Station 8 on Frye between Alma & Arizona. The decorating party will only run from 1:00-2:00 PM Saturday afternoon. It is important that we get a head count on the number of CERT members, family members and guests that are going to walk in the parade. Please let me know as soon as you can. We look forward to seeing you for a good time at the parade.

Adopt-a-Family Program

You may be asking, 'How can I Help Support the Adopt-a-Family program in 2008?' Here's how CERT members can help this year. All CERT members are being asked, by the Chandler CERT Council and the Chandler Fire Department, to support the program by donating NEW items that are considered "necessities" for day to day living by dropping them off at Chandler Fire Station 10, located at 5211 S. McQueen Road, Chandler. We recommend that the person calls Station 10 at 480-782-2110 prior to stopping by to drop off the items. However, if the person misses the crew at the Station, please ask him/her to put the items behind the large pillars in front of the building. Be sure to position the items so they are not easily seen from the street. If they miss the crew, please leave a telephone message at the Station's number to notify that items have been dropped off.

Ready.gov Video Blog

The Ready Campaign is launching a new tool to encourage Americans to take steps to prepare. The Campaign is hosting a video blog and is looking for Americans who have recently experienced an emergency situation such as Hurricanes Gustav or Ike to help us tell Americans why it is important to take steps in advance to prepare. This new video blog will be hosted on Ready's Web site www.ready.gov and aims to inspire more Americans to get an emergency supply kit, make an emergency plan and to be informed about the different emergencies that can happen.

Ready is looking for entries, so we hope you will pass this along to people who would be willing to help us get more Americans taking steps to prepare for emergencies.

District Call List

The purpose of the District Call List is to share info. with members on your list. It is a simple idea to back-up the Voice Shot telephone contact system - an automated system to contact the entire Chandler CERT membership in just a few minutes. The CERT Council feels it is also important to add a more personal touch to sharing information on a one-on-one basis.

The District Call Lists is design to simply read a short 'script' to the members you contact : however, we are currently missing one key element to make the back-up a success - YOU.

Neighborhood Outreach

Are you interested in public speaking? CERT needs people who would like to promote our CERT program to small and large public groups. Become part the cadre of trained Neighborhood Outreach public speakers for our program. We will train and provide you with materials and presentation formats to respond to public requests to learn about disaster preparedness and Chandler CERT.
